I had it "all." I had a six-figure, promising career. I was living in a luxury apartment in the heart of the big city. Living my "best life," living for the weekends so I could brunch and party with my friends. Then through a sequence of events and feelings that weren't familiar to me, I was diagnosed with Anxiety Disorder and Depression. I suffered in silence and went to therapy for a year without anyone knowing. It was then that I decided to "retire" from Corporate America at 27, to travel the world indefinitely. I haven't looked back since.
After having such a hard time many people ask, “what is my key to success?” My answer is always the same, just three words - Speak. Create. Release.
My introduction to travel started growing up. As a child, I read A LOT of books. I've always said to myself that when I was old enough, I was going to see all of the places in the world that I read about it books. In high school, I got into a magnet program that was focused on International Studies. In my Senior year, I had the opportunity to travel to China and Tibet for about a month. It's still one of the best experiences of my life! I've had the travel bug ever since! I believe "travel" chose me. Once I started traveling, I couldn't stop. And because I knew there was a way to make a living from travel and integrate it into my life, I decided not to limit myself!
Advice that Inspired Her
There was a quote that I heard years ago when I was interning while in college. It was by Henry Ford, and it says, "Whether you think you can, or you think you can't- you're right." When I started internalizing this, I knew that I could re-create my life. That I could let go of the programming and limitations of what my life was "supposed to be" as opposed to the experiences and lifestyle I desired to create.
Also, Will Smith once said, "Fear is not real. The only place that fear can exist is in our thoughts of the future. It is a product of our imagination, causing us to fear things that do not at present and may not ever exist. That is near insanity. Do not misunderstand me danger is very real, but fear is a choice." That's that on that. You can choose to be scared, or you can want to lean into the experience and reap the benefits. There will be a risk always, whatever you decide to do. So, JUST DO IT! That is the greatest advice that I can give to any woman.
Misconceptions about Travelpreneurship
The biggest misconception that I believe people have about working in the travel space and/or living abroad is that it's always a walk in the park! Moving abroad and working in travel has shifted my life in the best way possible, but it's not a "cure-all" for all your issues and challenges. Yes, you can sip on cocktails with your laptop open and listening to the waves all day. And while this can be true for you, living abroad and/or working in travel is still very much "real life." Bills have to be paid; you have to create new normals, build new relationships, and so on. As long as you're okay with starting over, then it's a fantastic experience!
Her Impact on the World
My primary audience is Millennial women of color. I hope that I can inspire more women that look like and resonate with me, to truly live the lives they deserve. And if that means traveling the world and starting over, so be it. It can be done.
Her Favorite Adventures
I've taken so many amazing trips! One of my best trips was to the Arctic Circle in Lapland, Finland. We went snowmobiling, dogsledding, ice fishing, and rode on a reindeer sled! It was incredible because it was such a different experience than the warmer destinations and experiences that I tend to have.
South Africa is the place I believe every woman should visit once in her life! There is something so magical about traveling to The Continent and specifically to South Africa. The people are incredibly hospitable, the landscapes are breathtaking, and the food and wine are some of the best in the world!
